Pioneer"s Permian Oil Costs Compete With Saudi Arabia---Is That A Lie?

Pioneer claims that it’s Permian oil costs can compete with Saudi Arabia. Is that a lie? Second quarter costs were actually $ 18 per BOE leaving only a $ 10 per barrel margin to drill and complete wells. The Saudis must be scared to death about that!

A Data Scientist Crunched the Numbers to Find the Most Heavy Metal Word in the English Language

The primary purpose of speaking and writing is to sound as cool as possible at all times, and now a data scientist has given us the specific keywords we need to impress our peers, no matter where we are. In a post on Degenerate State, the scientist took the lyrics off DarkLyrics.com,“the largest metal lyrics archive on the web,” from a database of 222,623 songs by 7,634 bands to analyze the most and least metal words. Comparing the DarkLyrics data with the Brown Corpus—a 1961 collection of English-language documents (no song lyrics) that is “the first of the modern, computer readable, general corpora”—the data scientist found the top 20 most and least metal words. Here’s a sampling:

At 205.6 MPH, An Electric Corvette Z06 Sets A New Record

The Tesla Model S has proved that electric cars don’t have to be boring, but for driving purists they lack that emotional connection to the vehicle and the road. Could a custom electric C6 Z06 Corvette that shed its gasoline engine but kept the gearbox be the best of both worlds?

Urban Airship Reach pushes Android and Apple Pay to the next level

A new study details that mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Android Pay are on the rise, but consumers want more — and it’s coming. Urban Airship says that in the last three months, 67 percent of millennials have used a mobile wallet, and 51 percent of users over the age of 35 are also fans. But it’s not payment solutions we’re taking advantage of. Instead, Urban Airship says we prefer loyalty cards and coupons when using our phones or wearables. Urban Airship is also rebranding its mobile wallet service as Reach to make it easier for companies to distribute…

Let there be no further doubt that Prisma, the app that turns your photos into artistic masterpieces, is a hit.

None other than famed author Neil Gaiman took to Instagram on Sunday to post a selfie using the app, and the result is almost as cool as a panel from one of his graphic novels.

“Started to shave beard off but got too sleepy so just turned it into a styled beard instead. But it dies soon,” wrote Gaiman on the Instagram post accompanying the image.

Prisma has taken off in recent weeks as users have flocked to the app that uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to mimic the painting and drawing styles of famous artists. The app was initially only available for iOS, but an Android version dropped just last week.  Read more…

Whether you love or hate the Apple Watch, charging it is often one of the first encounters many users have with the magic of wireless charging.

Now that magic has been taken to the next level with a new kind of Apple Watch charger that mixes wireless charging with magnetic levitation.

The Lift is a wireless charger designed to work with the Apple Watch and the Pebble smartwatches, offering a cool way to recharge your wearable while enjoying what looks like a piece of museum art from the future.

Oracle to buy cloud software provider NetSuite for $9.3 billion

Oracle has entered into an agreement to buy NetSuite, which provides cloud-based accounting, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, and other business software packages, for $ 9.3 billion.

The NetSuite package of products is complementary to Oracle’s cloud products and the companies’ cloud packages will “coexist in the marketplace forever,” Mark Hurd, Oracle’s CEO, said in a press release.

The deal will allow Oracle to serve a broader range of customers, including smaller businesses, and expand to more industries and more countries, the company said. Asked what additional advantages the deal brings, and Oracle spokeswoman said, “We are declining additional comment today.”

That Pokemon Go phone case designed to help you catch ‘em all is seeing such high demand that its Etsy shop has been closed (temporarily). The 3D printed case made headlines when it was launched because it basically forced you to throw the perfect Pokeball. Because most of us low-key suck at Pokemon Go, demand has been high. From Jcach3DPrinting’s Etsy page: Due to an OVERWHELMING demand we need to close the store for a few days whilst we catch up with demands. IDG Contributor Network: Kubernetes and OpenStack to collide in Silicon Valley

Mirantis, the pure play OpenStack company, is one of the sponsors of OpenStack Days – Silicon Valley. I caught up with Mirantis co-founder and CMO Boris Renski to learn more about the upcoming event. Here is an edited version of that interview…

Can you tell us more about the event?

OpenStack – Silicon Valley is the event that we started three years ago. This is the third in the series. The OpenStack community in general, as you know, has a summit twice a year and then it has this concept of OpenStack Days, which are different regional events that are organized by various community members.

OpenStack – Silicon Valley has historically been the event that’s organized by the Silicon Valley community of OpenStack. It is essentially the largest community to date because the users from the early days of OpenStack are based in Silicon Valley. The NASA Research Center that started the Nova project is also based out of here. And a lot of engineers are here. It’s probably the second biggest OpenStack event out there after the main OpenStack Summit.

How An Agricultural Data Firm Puts The Cloud To Work

Integration — connecting computing services to one another — used to mean bringing in expensive consultants, investing in custom programming, and dealing with long timelines. But modern cloud-based options could make integration only a matter of dragging icons and filling in form fields, work that can often be done without a developer. Here’s what it means to IT professionals.

Backing up to the cloud? Read the fine print

Some things never change. Back in July 2007 I had a “mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more” moment regarding cloud based file backup services.

One thing that backups are supposed to protect against is deleting a file by accident. Yet, multiple reviews at the time (Wall Street Journal, Ars Technica and the New York Times) failed to consider this.

And, the service that got glowing reviews back then, Mozy, provided poor protection. Files deleted on your computer would be deleted by Mozy after 30 days.

Fast forward to this week when Steve Gibson mentioned on his Security Now podcast, that someone he knows uses Carbonite to back up their files. That got me wondering. Sure enough, a look at Carbonite’s website turned up this
