Currently, doctors rely on textbooks, medical journals and clinical research to help point…

Canonical Patches Eight Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Canonical published multiple security advisories to inform the Ubuntu Linux community about the availability of new kernel updates for all of its supported Ubuntu OSes, including Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus).
Launched in April 21, 2016, and being a long-term supported release, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has already received its first big update, dubbed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS by the company, but that won’t stop Canonical from pushing new software versions and security updates whenever threats are found, all in order to keep users safe and secure.
Ubuntu Security Notice USN-3070-1 tells us about an important kernel update for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which patches a total of eight vulnerabilities discovered by various kernel hackers and developers in the upstream Linux 4.4 LTS kernel branch (the latest release is Linux kernel 4.4.19 LTS).
The security flaws vary from an information leak Linux kernel’s RDS (Reliable Datagram Sockets) implementation and a flaw in Linux kernel’s TCP implementation to a race condition in the MIC VOP driver, a heap-based buffer overflow in the USB HID driver, and issues with the airspy USB device kernel driver.
There are also a race condition in Linux kernel’s MIC VOP driver, some bugs in the OverlayFS implementation, and issues with PowerPC platforms, affecting not only Ubuntu 16.04 LTS but also its derivatives and official flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, and more.

Six scientists just spent a year inside a dome in Hawaii as they replicated what life would be like if they lived on Mars. NASA funded the experiment, which is meant to help figure out how crews could survive on Mars when a real mission is ready for launch.

The dome has two levels, a 993-square-foot ground floor with common rooms and a 424-square-foot second floor loft with six private compartments. It also has a 160-square-foot workshop attached. When they exited the dome, the scientists had a relatable craving.  Read more…

How VMware’s cross-cloud NSX will work

VMware this week announced plans to extend NSX, its software defined networking product, to public IaaS cloud computing platforms, allowing customers to manage multiple cloud environments with a single network management portal.

About 1,700 customers have already deployed NSX as an on-premises network virtualization platform. At some point in the future (VMware executives will not say when) the company will allow customers to deploy NSX across multiple different cloud providers. The idea is customers can centrally manage their on premises and public cloud resources within NSX. How exactly will this work?

VMware CEO pledges cloud computing freedom

In what’s become something of an annual tradition, we talked with VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger at the outset of the virtualization leader’s VMworld 2016 conference. In this interview with Network World Senior Writer Brandon Butler and IDG Chief Content Officer John Gallant, Gelsinger shared the big news from the event, including new tools that make it easier for customers to build cross-cloud environments, as well as an expanded partnership with IBM. With finalization of the Dell/EMC merger just over the horizon, Gelsinger reassured VMware customers about the company’s independence but said the resources available from that powerful ally will put ‘turbochargers’ on VMware’s back. He discussed the state of the software-defined data center and where customers stand in the deployment of virtual networks.

Devops and cloud: Great together, great apart

Devops strongly benefits many enterprises by encouraging more continuous development and deployment by bringing some operations capabilities to in-house programmers. The business case for continuous everything is easy to make, although these benefits vary from organization to organization.

It’s easy to attribute the rise of devops directly to the rise of cloud computing. After all, cloud computing also assumes continuously updated applications and infrastructure. Thus, many enterprises are looking at devops as the path to their cloud strategy. But that may not be the right approach.

India is embarking on an ambitious project that hopes to bring banking to every smartphone user in the country.

For decades, the country of more than 1.3 billion people has struggled to bring hundreds of millions of its citizens to a bank. The penetration of bank accounts, and by extension, debit cards and credit cards remain low in the country. But its new audacious payments system could bring banking and financial services to its entire population

India has launched a new payments system called Unified Payment Interface, or UPI, which is designed to make person-to-person and e-commerce transactions swifter and easier. Doing transactions, the government says, will be as easier and as faster as sending a text message. Read more…
