IDG Contributor Network: From Infrastructure-as-a-Service to Workforce-as-a-Service

Cloud computing was originally devised as an alternative to deploying racks of servers in company-owned (or shared) data centers. However, the technology services that have grown on top of the concept — to finally become quintessential to the concept — have changed the game.

The cloud stack: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS

Cloud technology is typically segmented into three layers, or service models:

  • Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provides infrastructure like physical computing resources, location, data partitioning, scaling, security, backup etc.

  • Platform as a service (PaaS) offers a development and deployment environment to application developers.

  • Software as a service (SaaS), sometimes referred to as on-demand software, provides access to application software for end-users.

While IaaS remains primarily a way for IT infrastructure to scale and adapt to changing requirements, the latter two (PaaS and SaaS) have become the key for companies to quickly build and deploy applications (and also complex business processes) that are easily and instantly accessible by users.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge costs less than $ 800. The new Solarin Android smartphone costs £9,500, which is about $ 14,000.

The team behind Solarin, Sirin Labs, announced the details on its super-expensive smartphone Tuesday, which the company said is designed for international businesspeople who want to keep sensitive information private. According to the company’s press release, the phone uses the same communication encryption technology as the military.

That kind of security is enticing to some people, but $ 14,000 goes farther than encryption. Inside the Solarin is a base storage of 128GB, 4GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 810 2GHz eight-core processor. It also boasts five antennas and 24 LTE bands, reaching data speeds of up to 4.6 Gbps. Read more…

Nvidia chief downplays challenge from Google’s AI chip

Nvidia has staked a big chunk of its future on supplying powerful graphics chips used for artificial intelligence, so it wasn’t a great day for the company when Google announced two weeks ago that it had built its own AI chip for use in its data centers.

Google’s Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, was built specifically for deep learning, a branch of AI through which software trains itself to get better at deciphering the world around it, so it can recognize objects or understand spoken language, for example.

Researchers: Cloud is a no commodity

A new report from 451 Research theorizes that the “race to the bottom” of public IaaS cloud prices is an unsustainable model that is not expanding market share. Instead vendors have transitioned to a “race to the top” to add higher-level application services on top of their clouds to grow their businesses.

Three years ago IaaS vendors dropped prices regularly, sometimes within hours of each other, in what appeared to be a race to the lowest prices in the cloud. Today, public cloud IaaS vendors focus much more on providing higher-level application services that run on top of their infrastructure in an effort to attract and retain customers.

The company is a 25-year veteran of the storage industry. Traditionally active in the enterprise arena, it produces its own enterprise storage hardware and vertical offerings tailored to the video, rich media and other industries. It seems the enterprise wasn’t quite enough for Promise and hence they’ve decided to enter the consumer market.

65 million Tumblr account records are up for sale on the underground market

A few weeks ago, Tumblr notified users of a data breach that resulted in the theft of user email addresses and hashed passwords. The company did not say how many accounts were affected, but recently someone put the data up for sale and the number is: 65 million records.

The data is being sold on a Tor dark market website called TheRealDeal by a user named peace_of_mind who also sold 167 million user records stolen from LinkedIn. Recently he also posted offers for 360 million accounts allegedly stolen from MySpace and 40 million from adult dating website Fling.com.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella follows Apple’s Tim Cook to India

Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella is visiting India, reflecting the growing importance of the country as a market for multinational technology companies.

Nadella’s visit follows the first visit to India by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who visited the country this month to drum up support for the company’s plans to offer refurbished iPhones in the price-sensitive market as well as to get permission to set up its wholly-owned stores in the country. Both deals appear to have been blocked by regulators, according to reports.

While Apple was largely seen as lacking focus on India until recently, when its China revenue fell 11 percent, while iPhone sales in India grew 56 percent year-on-year in the last quarter, Microsoft has been a long-time player in the Indian market.
