Report: Apple is trying to buy TIDAL

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is in talks to acquire TIDAL. The discussions may not lead to a deal, sources claim, but it seems Apple is interested in TIDAL’s relationship with artists. Jay Z, who purchased TIDAL in 2015, is not suing the company that sold the service to him over inflated subscriber numbers. TIDAL itself is being sued by artists for not paying royalties, too. This is on the back of news that Apple is drawing the ire of Spotify, which claims Apple is engaging in unfair business practices meant to stifle competition. This likely won’t play well…

Google has officially announced the name of the next version of Android. Android N will be officially be called Android Nougat.

The news comes six weeks after Google put the name to the public.

Although the name might disappoint some Indian users (who were campaigning for Neyyappam), if you think about it, it’s really the only obvious choice.

Android Nougat will be available later this year.

We’re building Momentum: A new event for New York

Last year, just months after the dust had settled from TNW Conference in Amsterdam and its 3,500 attendees, we promised to turn the 2016 edition into a week-long festival for 20,000 coders, founders, and geeks: the first of its kind in Europe. Last month we saw the result: an event that Gary Vaynerchuk stopped mid-keynote to call ‘unbelievable,’ ‘f*cking awesome,’ and ‘the nicest set up to a conference’ he had ever seen – to the applause of his entire audience. TNW Conference 2016 was an eye-opener: we realized that paying serious attention to detail to create a festival experience transformed the…

Google age-discrimination lawsuit may become a monster

Just over a year ago, two job applicants filed a lawsuit against Google. They claimed they were rejected because of their age. Both were over 40.

A federal court in San Jose, Calif., is now being asked to decide whether many others who sought jobs at Google and were also rejected can join this case.

On Wednesday, a motion for conditional certification of collective action status was filed. This motion, similar to a class action, seeks to include “all individuals who interviewed in-person for any software engineer, site reliability engineer, or systems engineer position with Google in the United States during the time period from August 13, 2010 through the present; were age 40 or older at the time of the interview; and were refused employment by Google.”

Are West Virginia"s Floods The Result Of Climate Change? And A Congressman Gone AWOL

For a state that has been racked with recession and unemployment, the flash floods that have ravaged West Virginia don’t help much. But the key question to ask — no matter how unpleasant — is whether the coal sector there shares some of the blame. At issue is the concept of climate change and whether the warmer atmosphere is holding more water and therefore intensifying the storms. To that end, West Virginia’s prime industry has been coal, a fuel that when burned is responsible for a third of all human-induced carbon emissions. Even more, the surface mining that has occurred is lopping off whole mountaintops and removing the vegetation, leaving the landscape vulnerable to erosion. The water running off the mountain is thus more rapid, adding to the problem of flash flooding, says Kathleen Miller, a scientist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., in a phone interview. “The climate is highly variable and you can’t attribute specific events to climate change,” adds Dr. Miller. “But when you look long term, many environmental changes are all pointing in the same direction and supporting the conclusion that global climate change is underway: melting sea ice, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. “It is the weight of the evidence that must be considered.”

Ericsson claims a world first with transcontinental 5G trial

Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom have announced a partnership to deploy world’s first transcontinental 5G trial network, reports Telecoms.com.

The objective of the agreement will be to provide optimized end-user experiences by providing consistent quality of services and roaming experiences for advanced 5G use cases with enhanced global reach. Ericsson will act as the sole supplier to the project, which will include technologies such as NFV, software defined infrastructure, distributed cloud, and network slicing.

Last October, Ericsson and SK Telecom conducted a successful demonstration of network slicing technology, which featured the creation of virtual network slices optimized for services including super multi-view and augmented reality/virtual reality, Internet of Things offerings and enterprise solutions.

“5G is very different from its predecessors in that the system is built as a platform to provide tailored services optimized for individual customer’s needs, at a global scale,” said Alex Jinsung Choi, CTO at SK Telecom. “Through this three-party collaboration, we will be able to better understand and build a 5G system that can provide consistent and enhanced user experience across the globe.”

Alongside the announcement, Ericsson and SK Telecom also successfully completed a demonstration of 5G software-defined telecommunications infrastructure, using the vendors Hyperscale Datacenter System (HDS) 8000 solution. The pair claims this is a world-first and will enable dynamic composition of network components to meet scale requirements of 5G services.

Software-defined telecommunications infrastructure is one of the enablers of network slicing, which will allow operators to create individual virtualized environments which are optimized for specific users. The demonstration itself focused on two use cases; ultra-micro-network end-to-end (E2E) slicing for personalized services, and ultra-large-network E2E slicing for high-capacity processing.

“SDTI is an innovative technology that enhances network efficiency by flexibly constructing hardware components to satisfy the infrastructure performance requirements of diverse 5G services,” said Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology R&D Center at SK Telecom.

Finally, Ericsson has announced another partnership with Japanese telco KDDI with the ambition of delivering IoT on a global scale and providing enhanced connectivity services to KDDI customers.

The partnership will focus on Ericsson’s cloud-based IoT platform to deliver services such as IoT connectivity management, subscription management, network connectivity administration and flexible billing services. The pair claims the new proposition will enable KDDI’s customers to deploy, manage and scale IoT connected devices and applications globally.

IoT represents a significant opportunity for enterprise customers and operators alike, as it significantly increases the amount of data available and also access points to customers worldwide. Research firm Statista estimates the number of devices worldwide could exceed 50 billion, though the definition of what a connected device is or what an IoT connected device is varies.

“KDDI has for a long time been committed to building the communication environment to connect with world operators in order to support the global businesses of our customers,” said Keiichi Mori, GM of KDDI’s IoT Business Development Division. “We believe that by adopting DCP, we will be able to leverage Ericsson’s connection with world carriers and furthermore promote our unified service deployment globally to customers as they start worldwide IoT deployments.”

Microsoft appears to be building a business app marketplace

Microsoft appears to be building a business app store. The company put online a test version of a service called AppSource that’s designed to help businesses find software that augments the Microsoft products they already use, such as Power BI and Dynamics AX.

The AppSource site was available Tuesday night at appsource.microsoft.com), but is down now. A description on its homepage said that users would be able to use the site to find software-as-a-service offerings from Microsoft and selected partners that they could try for free before purchasing them.

All of this appears to have come to light after someone developing the site at Microsoft accidentally made a test version of it available on the public Internet, where it was discovered by a prolific Microsoft leaker who goes by Walking Cat on Twitter.

Motorola Moto G4 And G4 Plus Ship July 12th Unlocked And At Very Attractive Price Points

Motorola stepped out today to announce that their 5.5-inch Moto G4 and G4 Plus Android smartphones will start shipping in the US on July 12th. Perhaps the most notable aspect of these phones is their price, which starts at $ 199.99 for the Moto G4 and $ 249.99 for the Moto G4 Plus. And both devices are universally unlocked on both GSM and CDMA networks, not tied to a specific carrier. At these price points, you’re typically looking at some sort of long term commitment with a carrier to subsidize the device but these new Moto handsets with big displays manage to pull it off contract-free.

HBO just confirmed the popular Game of Thrones ‘R+L = J’ fan theory

If you’re keeping up with your Game of Thrones theories, you likely know about ‘R+L = J,’ which is not a screwy math problem. At least as the TV show goes, it’s been confirmed by HBO’s ‘Making Game of Thrones’ blog. If you’re not sure what R+L = J is, it’s surprisingly simple (for Game of Thrones, at least). In a nutshell, it means that Rhaegar Targaryen (R) and Lyanna Stark (L) are Jon Snow’s real parents (J). In the show, we see that Lyanna Stark is Jon Snow’s mother, but HBO tried to obfuscate her telling Ned who the father…

Your favorite emoji can now have a secret meaning.

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, has created a new game that uses emoji to teach people about encryption.

The web-based tool, called Codemoji, allows you to send coded messages to friends using emoji. It uses emoji characters to create simple ciphers in order to illustrate the basics of encryption.

Here’s how it works: begin by writing a message you want your friends to decode, then pick an emoji that will serve as the key to decoding it. Codemoji then scrambles your message into a string of emoji characters, which you send to friends.  Read more…

Another day, another chapter in Facebook’s love/hate relationship with the media.

Facebook announced on Wednesday that it has once again changed the secret recipe that decides what to show its users in their Newsfeeds. What might mean a few more baby pictures for the average users could mean a serious decline in audience for media companies that rely on the social network for distribution.

This isn’t the first time that Facebook has tweaked its algorithm (nor will it be the last), but it seems poised to be the biggest change since July 2015 when Facebook became the top Internet traffic referrer — a title it could conceivably give up if the change is as dramatic as some seem to fear.
