Even with all the crap going on in the world, you can always count on the internet to come up with something stupidly wonderful to distract you from reality and cheer you up.

Alex Holachek’s “Reaction GIF Generator” (via BoingBoing) isn’t your typical GIF generator. In what must have been a clever napkin idea, Holachek decided it would be brilliant to combine the randomness of Giphy with Microsoft’s Emotion API, which uses machine learning to detect between eight distinct, universal emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness, and surprise).

The result of his mashup is this hilarious GIF generator that analyzes your selfie and then spits out a GIF to match your facial expression. Read more…

Meteor JavaScript Reworks PaaS, Data Layer Connection

Meteor, a JavaScript Web framework for quick app-building, will gain faster build tools and features like per-module code-splitting this year. The company Meteor will also rework the relationship among the Meteor framework, Meteor’s Galaxy platform as a service, and Meteor’s Apollo data layer project.

The Meteor team will focus on improvements designed to work well across the two products, including the addition of IP whitelisting to the Galaxy platform as a service. Meteor wants Galaxy-based developers to spend less time on “plumbing” and more time on features, said Meteor vice president of product Matt DeBergalis.

As a country, Australia makes a great petri dish.

It has a relatively small population, it’s English-speaking and it has an estimated smartphone penetration of 84 percent — all qualities that make it the ideal place for Tinder to test its new features, according to the dating app’s founder.

Australians take to product updates faster than other markets, Tinder chairman Sean Rad told Mashable in Sydney on Tuesday. And that’s why features like Tinder Social, which allows users to set up group dates, were piloted here first. Read more…

Microsoft"s mysterious "Windows Cloud" could be the second coming of Windows RT

Windows Cloud: That name has appeared in system files deep within some of the most recent Windows 10 Insider builds. While a few experts guess it could be a new version of Windows, what it actually is remains a mystery.

As far as evidence goes, it’s pretty slim pickings. Two names, “Windows Cloud” and “Windows Cloud N,” appear in a list of Windows versions as early as the recent Windows 10 Insider Build 15002, as originally reported by the Walking Cat Twitter account. (The “N” designation likely refers to a version specifically designed for European countries.)

Forget touchscreens, this smartphone concept wants to use holograms

Your future smartphone could be entirely voice activated, displaying your text messages and other info with holograms. At least, that’s the idea behind Alo, a new smartphone concept that imagines a touchscreen-less smartphone.

Created by French designer Jamie Olivet with art direction from acclaimed designer Philippe Starck, Alo ditches the typical smartphone display. Instead, the voice-activated phone will project holograms from its camera that show your text messages or let you watch videos, according to Dezeen’s interview with Oliviet.

While the core of the device is molded aluminum alloy, the outer shell is a “gelatinous, supple and natural envelope that perfectly fits your hand,” Olivet writes on his website. I am not really sure what that means (I’ve reached out to Olivet for more information) but Deezan reports the surface will also vibrate and give off heat as another means of interaction. Read more…

Dropbox’s Paper app leaves beta to take on Google Docs

A couple of years ago, Dropbox set out to take on traditional productivity apps with Paper, a tool for collaborating on flexible documents. After more than a year in beta, it’s finally ready for prime-time and is available to everyone with an account. If you’ve used Google Docs, Microsoft Word or Zoho Writer, you’ll find yourself in familiar territory with Paper. However, Dropbox’s app ditches the traditional toolbar interface for a clean, distraction-free workspace. You can add text, tables, images and embeddable Web elements (like a Pinterest board or a YouTube video), and collaborate with others you’ve shared your document…

Harbinger of The Great Internet Wall arrives

By Presidential proclamation, non-U.S. citizens’ data is in jeopardy

An executive order by President Trump could hurt a data transfer framework that allows EU citizens’ personal information to be transmitted to the U.S. for processing with the promise that the data would have the same privacy protection in the U.S. as it has in the EU.

That’s because a section of the order says, “Agencies shall, to the extent consistent with applicable law, ensure that their privacy policies exclude persons who are not United States citizens or lawful permanent residents from the protections of the Privacy Act regarding personally identifiable information.”

Hackers use ransomware to target hotel guests’ door locks

A bunch of hackers spoiled several travelers’ trip to the Alps last week when the group used ransomware to attempt to lock guests of the Romantik Seehotel Jägerwir luxury hotel out of their rooms by hijacking the central key management system. According to English-language European news outlet The Local, people staying at the Austrian hotel couldn’t use their key cards to enter their rooms; it was also not possible to program new key cards. The establishment’s reservation system and the cash desk system were also taken down by the hackers. All that for a ransom of just 1,500 EUR ($ 1,605) in Bitcoin. The…
