Why the internet was so screwed up today

TwitterFacebook

Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3, the cloud computing service that backs many major sites and services, including Netflix, Airbnb, Giphy and 148,213 other sites, suffered a disruption on Tuesday, bringing large parts of the internet to a grinding halt.

Many of Mashable‘s AWS-backed systems, including Slack, Trello and our internal CMS slowed or became unresponsive shortly after 1 p.m. ET, confirming the disruption.

While the cause of the outage still hasn’t been confirmed, Amazon acknowledged the problems on the AWS Twitter account and promised anxious users it was hard at work on a fix.

For S3, we believe we understand root cause and are working hard at repairing. Future updates across all services will be on dashboard.

Londoner gets a 5 hour ‘accidental’ detour courtesy of Uber

After bedding down in the back of an Uber, a London man awoke to quite a surprise. Shortly after entering the car, Aaron Wray fell asleep. His trip was a short one, or at least it was supposed to be. All told, the jaunt from Brixton to Croyton (both in London) was about a 30-minute affair. Not this time. After waking hours later, Wray discovered he was nowhere near his destination. When questioned, the driver informed him that it’d be another two-and-a-half hours to get home. “My phone was dead, so I just had to sit there,” Wray told The Sun. “I…

Amazon S3 Internet outage unleashes flood of apologies -- from others

While Amazon Web Services hasn’t yet issued an apology via its social media channels regarding big problems today with its Simple Storage Service (S3), the company’s customers have turned to Twitter and Facebook to apologize to their own customers — while pointing the finger at AWS.

AWS, via its @awscloud Twitter account, did alert customers that “S3 is experiencing high error rates. We are working hard on recovering.” That was posted a bit after 2pm EST and Amazon has since posted a few updates, including a note about the status dashboard recovering.

SAP sets March 30 as launch date for its dev kit for iOS

BARCELONA — Almost a year after SAP teamed with Apple to develop business applications for smartphones and tablets, the German enterprise software developer is ready to unveil the first fruits of their partnership.

On March 30, it plans to release the first version of SAP Cloud Platform SDK for iOS, a tool to help businesses integrate Apple’s handheld devices with their back-end information systems. And at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week it opened enrollment for SAP Academy for iOS, a mix of paid and free training services to help develop apps with that tool.

It may have looked as though Apple were retreating from the enterprise when it axed its Xserve rack-mounted server line in 2011, but since then it has multiplied its partnerships with enterprise hardware, software and service vendors, most notably IBM in 2014, Cisco Systems in 2015 and, last year, SAP.

Cloud project? Prepare for failure

You’ve been tasked with moving 50 applications and their data to the cloud. That’s a daunting task, even if you’ve done it before, but most such migrations are first-time efforts. There’s a big risk in your making a mistake or in the fundamental approach you’ve chosen.

Surveys from Innotas seem to indicate that the initial wave of transitions to the cloud has in fact increased the number of failures. In 2014, an Innotas survey of IT pros showed that 32 percent of their companies experienced at least one project failure in the prior year. In 2015, that percentage jumped to 55 percent. (Some good news: The percentage dipped to 50 percent in the 2016 survey.)

How Cisco wants to become the Switzerland of the cloud

After years of juggling with different strategies of how to pursue the cloud computing market, Cisco now has what it believes will be a winning one: Become a so-called Switzerland of the cloud.

Cisco is not spending billions of dollars to build a public cloud to compete with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. “That ship has sailed,” says Fabio Gori, head of cloud marketing at Cisco.

Sean Spicer is checking staff phones because his office leaks like sieve

TwitterFacebook

Imagine if Noah had built his arc without checking for termites. All that wood, freshly cut and slotted into place for this big beautiful boat, suddenly full of holes and soaked to the core.

Now imagine this boat is the White House press office. Just a ship full of leaks in the middle of a monsoon, trying to survive with duct tape and beat-up plastic buckets.

News reports make it seem like we know everything that happens in the White House. Press Secretary Sean Spicer says something behind closed doors, and an article appears on the internet maybe an hour or a day later. Last week, according to multiplereports, he gathered his staff and told them to pile their phones on a table so others could comb through them in an attempt to figure out who was leaking to the press. He drilled in the importance of not leaking this meeting to any outlet, and of course we knows this because it leaked immediately. It’s like watching a man new to arcades slowly become overwhelmed by whack-a-mole.  Read more…

Space X to zoom two citizen astronauts to the moon

Space X today said two unnamed private citizens have paid the company a “significant deposit” to fly them to the moon and back to Earth.

“We expect to conduct health and fitness tests, as well as begin initial training later this year. Other flight teams have also expressed strong interest and we expect more to follow. Additional information will be released about the flight teams, contingent upon their approval and confirmation of the health and fitness test results,” Space X stated.

Space X said the mission will take place after the space company launches its unmanned Dragon (Version 2) spacecraft to the International Space Station later this year.

“The first webscale players will enter the wireless access domain with mainstream technologies,” Suri said. Webscale usually refers to operators of big clouds, like Google, Facebook, and Alibaba. Suri didn’t name any names.

For enterprises, an emerging technique called network slicing will allow them to virtually run their own private services on mobile operator networks. Meanwhile, systems that bring LTE to unlicensed or shared frequencies, like LAA (Licensed Assisted Access), will also help open doors to private cellular networks. Nokia is already working with some energy utilities on these kinds of deployments, and at MWC it will join Qualcomm in demonstrating a private LTE network, Suri said.

3 little things in Linux 4.10 that will make a big difference

Linux never sleeps. Linus Torvalds is already hard at work pulling together changes for the next version of the kernel (4.11). But with Linux 4.10 now out, three groups of changes are worth paying close attention to because they improve performance and enable feature sets that weren’t possible before on Linux.

Here’s a rundown of those changes to 4.10 and what they likely will mean for you, your cloud providers, and your Linux applications.

1. Virtualized GPUs

One class of hardware that’s always been difficult to emulate in virtual machines is GPUs. Typically, VMs provide their own custom video driver (slow), and graphics calls have to be translated (slow) back and forth between guest and host. The ideal solution would be to run the same graphics driver in a guest that you use on the host itself and have all the needed calls simply relayed back to the GPU.

Lenovo to integrate Amazon Alexa into Moto smartphones

Lenovo is working with Amazon to get the Alexa voice assistant into a range of Motorola smartphones, and in the process, looking to depose Google’s voice assistant technology.

The partners will first focus on developing an Alexa “Mod,” a block that will attach to a Moto Z modular handset. The companies will then integrate Alexa directly into a variety of Moto handsets and devices, Lenovo said during a press conference in Barcelona on Sunday.

The Moto Z is much like Google’s Project Ara, where individual parts like speakers and projectors can be added to boost the functionality of the handset.

The exact details of the Alexa Mod for Moto Z weren’t provided, but an onstage image showed a speaker that could hook up to the handset. It looked like a flatter and curved version of Amazon’s Echo or Echo Dot.

Samsung mulls iris scanners on smartphones to log into Windows PCs

Soon, your Samsung phone may be able to recognize your iris and log you into your Windows PC.

Iris-scanning via phone is not yet a feature available for Samsung’s latest Galaxy Book 2-in-1s, which were announced at Mobile World Congress. But the company wants to quickly bridge the gap between its Galaxy smartphones, which run on Android, and its Windows PCs and 2-in-1s.

Software called Samsung Flow links the company’s Android smartphones to Windows PCs. Samsung and Microsoft are looking to collaborate on logins via Windows Hello — designed to use biometric authentication to log into PCs — and one big Flow feature is the ability to use Galaxy smartphones to wirelessly log in to the new Galaxy Book.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to officially be revealed on March 29

The Galaxy S8 is officially on the way. Samsung just sent out invites to the press for its Unpacked 2017 event, taking place on March 29. It shows off the silhouette of a phone, so there’s no doubt there as to what Samsung will be unveiling. The invite has the tagline “Unbox your phone,” which probably alludes to the phone’s longer aspect ratio and curved screen corners we’ve seen throughout numerous leaks. If you’re having deja vu, perhaps that’s because LG announced a similar change with the G6 this morning. We’ll be reporting live from New York, so stay tuned…

Yes, the cloud will kill jobs—maybe even yours

One of the first questions that I get from a new client moving to the cloud is what organizational changes it will likely go through. Although clients want to adopt cloud computing as disruptive technology, they don’t want to disrupt their roles in the organization.

But you can’t really disrupt your technology without disrupting your work—and some of the people who do that work.

That disruption can take two forms: job change and job loss. People fear both, and they rightfully fear job loss. As a study by the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University, 85 percent of the 5.6 million jobs lost in the United States from 2000 to 2010 were attributable to technological change, largely automation.

Cisco unveils Hierarchy of Needs for the digital enterprise

The European edition of Cisco Live took place this week in Berlin, which is a fitting location given the amount of innovation happening in that city right now. If you ever find yourself in Berlin, be sure to check out Cisco’s Open Berlin innovation center where inventive start-ups are building and showcasing solutions that run on Cisco technology.

Innovation and digital transformation are linked together like Kirk and Spock. You can’t have one without the other. At this week’s event, Ruba Borno, Cisco vice president of growth initiatives and chief of staff for the office of the CEO, gave her first-ever keynote to a Cisco Live audience. Not surprisingly, she focused on digital transformation. However, unlike many keynotes I have seen, Borno didn’t just talk about digitization at a high level. Instead she was more prescriptive and gave the audience a guide on how to proceed with making the shift to a digital enterprise.
