If you’re into artificial intelligence, high-speed mechanical competition, and the kind of open-minded ‘statement’ designs for which concept cars are known, then you’ll find that the Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA)’s all-electric Formula E circuit just got a whole lot sexier.
Intel’s unveiling of their new Broadwell-EP based Xeon E5 v4 server and HPC processors made a splash today in the enterprise markets, as the new multicore chips that range all the way up to monster 22-core variants and built on Intel’s 14nm process technology, offer better efficiency and higher compute throughput along with new features and optimizations. Specifically, improvements in AVX instructions optimization, for example, which are critical for floating point operations that are vital to multimedia, scientific and financial processing workloads, afford the chip performance boosts in excess of 50 percent in certain mission-critical applications.

Earlier this week we reported a bug in iOS 9.3 that caused apps to become unresponsive after tapping on links in Safari. The bug seemed to affect any iOS device, but was most prevalent on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Today, Apple released an update to fix the problem. iOS 9.3.1 has a pretty short changelog — a single item that “Fixes an issue that caused apps to be unresponsive after tapping on links in Safari and other apps,” it says. The issue seems to have appeared after the iOS 9.3 update and somehow affected an iOS 9 change…

Microsoft Executive Vice President Qi Lu had an interesting pitch for developers Thursday: Build applications that use data from Microsoft Office.
Microsoft’s crown jewel for building apps that integrate with Office is its Graph set of APIs, which let developers build applications that know how users work with one another. Lu, speaking at the company’s Build developer conference, announced six new APIs to improve the Microsoft Graph, including one that allows developers to see when a group of users is available to meet.
That functionality will let developers build more intelligent applications that help people who use Office to work together, which can help Microsoft tie customers deeper into its productivity ecosystem. According to Lu, API calls to the Microsoft Graph have been growing 420 percent month over month since it was released last year.

No, it’s not buying Salesforce.com, as was rumored last year.
Big Blue has, instead, made a bid for Bluewolf, a consulting practice that specializes in helping companies integrate Salesforce.com’s CRM services into their IT systems. IBM values the market for this and other Salesforce.com-related professional services around at US$ 111 billion annually.
Bluewolf has been working with Salesforce.com since 2001, and publishes an annual report on the market for that company’s services, “The State of Salesforce.”

At its Build 2016 developer conference in San Francisco today, Microsoft announced three improvements that help developers leverage Microsoft Office. Qi Lu, executive vice president at Microsoft, took the stage to show off what’s new with Microsoft Graph, Office for Mac 2016, Skype, and Office 365.
In November 2015, Microsoft launched the Microsoft Graph, which gives applications access to digital work and digital life data across the Microsoft cloud. Put another way, the company opened the door for developers to leverage data, intelligence, and APIs with a single authorization token in their own apps.
Today, the Microsoft Graph expanded to include a user’s out-of-office status, recent email attachments, as well as new APIs that return “relevant documents” and suggestions for meeting times based on real-time calendar availability. Applications that consume Office data will also be more responsive, Microsoft promises, as they can now get notifications through Microsoft Graph for changes to users’ email, calendar, and contacts.
On stage, DocuSign was demoed to show how users can pick files directly from their OneDrive account, search for signatories from their contacts and colleagues by expertise or phonetic name matches, and be notified when a colleague they are emailing a document to is out of the office. Zapier meanwhile was showed off using the Excel REST API to interact with a file sitting in OneDrive for Business and add data to an Excel spreadsheet.
Next, Microsoft announced add-ins are coming to Office 2016 for Mac “later this spring.” The company also promised centralized deployment and programmatic creation of ribbons and buttons.
Three examples were given Starbucks is developing an Outlook add-in that allows people to send gift cards within Outlook, schedule meetings at nearby Starbucks locations, and eventually even arrange for coffee delivery. Baydin has built a Boomerang add-in with custom ribbon buttons for email productivity tools inside Outlook and the officeatwork Document Wizard add-in offers data-driven Word templates.
Last but not least, Microsoft unveiled the new Skype Web SDK, Skype for Business App SDK, and Office 365 group connectors. The first two allow companies combine “cloud voice, meetings, and messaging” in their apps across a range of web and device platforms.
Office 365 group connectors allow developers to push data from their own services into an Office 365 group conversation in Outlook. Microsoft also announced that Office 365 Connectors will be coming to the Outlook Inbox “soon.”
Out of all of the above, add-ins are probably the easiest to grasp. It remains to be seen which ones developers race to implement though, as Microsoft is clearly still at the stage of trying to figure out how best to reach its 1.2 billion Office users.

BEIJING (By Paul Carsten, Reuters) – A team from China plans to challenge Google’s AlphaGo, the artificial intelligence (AI) program that beat a world-class player in the ancient board game Go, the state-owned Shanghai Securities News reported on Thursday.
Scientists from the China Computer Go team will issue a challenge to AlphaGo by the end of 2016, said attendees at an event in Beijing organized by the Chinese Go Association and the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, according to the report. It did not elaborate on the nature of the challenge.
The event was ‘The Forum for Understanding the AlphaGo War between Man and Machine and Chinese Artificial Intelligence’, Shanghai Securities News reported on its website.
AlphaGo, developed by Google subsidiary DeepMind, shocked audiences when it beat South Korean professional Go player Lee Sedol in Seoul earlier this month.
The program made history last year by becoming the first machine to beat a human pro player, but 33-year-old Lee, one of the world’s top players, was seen as a much more formidable opponent.
Go, most popular in countries such as China, South Korea and Japan, involves two contestants moving black and white stones across a square grid, aiming to seize the most territory.
Until AlphaGo’s victory last year, experts had not expected an artificial intelligence program to beat a human professional for at least a decade.
Also on Thursday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai visited one of China’s top Go training schools, according to the China Daily.
A spokesman at Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc, said Pichai was in China to develop his understanding of Go and of the country.
Chinese companies like Baidu Inc, the country’s nearest equivalent of Google, are also working on developing AI.
Baidu in 2014 hired former Google engineer Andrew Ng, who had helmed the U.S. search giant’s Google Brain AI efforts.

Last week Google made it clear that it takes cloud computing seriously: “dead serious,” as Diane Greene, Google’s top cloud exec, stressed. To make its case, the company brought out a range of enterprise customers (Disney, Domino’s, Best Buy, and others) and a bevy of functional improvements.
What it didn’t showcase, however, was the culture necessary to win over the enterprise.
Eric Knorr suggests that “perhaps most important of all in Google’s enterprise push is the rapid evolution of Kubernetes,” the company’s container project. Though important, such innovations don’t address the biggest gap in Google’s cloud: DNA. Even as “entire data centers are being closed and replaced by AWS,” as former Netflix cloud chief Adrian Cockcroft highlights, Google needs to quickly learn to speak enterprise if it hopes to compete with corporate-savvy AWS.

The potential benefits of cloud computing are well known, and many vendors broadcast these benefits to sell their cloud solutions or services.
Even as security remains a concern for cloud users, research firm IHS says managed security vendors are increasingly delivering their security products via the cloud.
And by 2020, most managed security services will be delivered via the cloud, IHS predicts.

With seven transactions totaling $ 150 million, including the $ 90 million financing for new unicorn Anaplan, the first two months of 2016 have been quiet on the funding front for inside sales. The future will tell us if it is a reflection of the overall technology slowdown, or if we have reached an investment peak that precedes industry consolidation.
A high-resolution version of the VB Profiles Inside Sales landscape is available here. (Disclosure: VB Profiles is a cooperative effort between VentureBeat and Spoke Intelligence.)
The $ 30 million funding from NewVoiceMedia is the largest financing from a pure-play Inside Sales Technology. This externally led round was smaller than the last one, which totaled $ 50 million. NewVoiceMedia scored a second big win with the addition of Moni Manor, former Five9 CTO, as chief product officer. With a total $ 140 million raised since inception, NewVoiceMedia has captured the market’s attention. Originally a Contact Center cloud software provider, NewVoiceMedia has expanded into the Inside Sales space by first repackaging its core technology and later by adding gamification capabilities.
Social Engagement received some attention with two small financings. Insightpool sits at the crossroads of Sales and Marketing, mining social networks to find influencers and prospects. Initially targeting the B2B market, it has been expanding its efforts to encompass B2C. Socedo is a pure-play sales company focused on lead generation on Twitter.
Although not an event of the previous month per se, I came to recognize the growing importance of coaching. You can expect it to become a dedicated category in the next iteration of my Inside Sales technology landscape.
Coaching importance grew because many of the inside sales roles are entry positions into the sales profession. It is also a way to address the high learning and growth expectations of younger generations. Inside Sales initial successes were fueled by email communication, which is text-based. As the market matured, companies have rediscovered the importance of engaging in-person with prospects. It hinges on good conversation skills that are best taught by coaching.
It is not a surprise that voice solution vendors have experienced strong customer demand for recording and coaching. RingDNA, for example, made it a central theme of its roadmap, introducing a Coaching module in its latest release. It departs from legacy recording offerings that target compliance by making sales behavior the focal point. We have also seen the emergence of pure-play providers such as ExecVision trying to innovate the market with a mobile application to make coaching on the go easier. Their vision is to make coaching pervasive in the organization by enabling anyone to listen to his/her calls and mark the important moments.
